The role that made Xie Miao a presence in international cinema required him to be voiceless. In The Furious, his first global distribution deal, his first film landing on the right side of critical immunity, he plays a father whose daughter has been taken by a trafficking network, a man who cannot speak and must communicate everything through body language alone. Fury, grief, love, precision: all of it arrives without words. It is a strange full circle for a man who spent most of his adult career explaining himself to an industry that could not quite place him.

He grew up in Beijing, born in May 1984. His parents enrolled him in martial arts when he was seven and he took to wushu with the seriousness of a child who had found what he was for. By his early teens he had won championship titles in multiple tournaments, training at Beijing Kuanjie Shaolin Martial Arts School. The casting call that changed his immediate future came from a martial arts class: a director needed a child who could move convincingly in the frame of an action film, and Miao could do that in ways most adults could not.

What followed was two years that left a permanent mark on the East Asian action film canon. In Wong Jing The New Legend of Shaolin (1994), Miao played Hong Wending in a role that required him not just to fight but to anchor an emotional throughline the script actually asked him to honor. It worked well enough that My Father Is a Hero arrived the following year, again with Li and a cast that included Zhou Runfa, Anita Mui, and Wu Mengda.

And then, substantially, he stopped. The account Miao has returned to in interviews attributes the withdrawal partly to Zhou Runfa advice to complete his education and partly to his mother conviction that schooling came first. By 2002 he was enrolled at the Capital University of Physical Education and Sports in Beijing, studying ethnic sports. The film industry, which had celebrated him at ten, did not particularly notice his absence.

When he graduated in 2006, re-entry meant starting from the lower levels of a digital economy that Chinese cinema was still learning to calibrate. He made television work, then web movies. By 2014 he had committed to this form seriously enough to earn the designation King of Web Movies. He won Best Actor at the China Yinchuan Internet Film Festival in 2019 for Blood Battle at Shuole City. Over twenty years in the industry, the gap between his professional standing in China and his reputation abroad had widened to the point of near-invisibility.

The turning point came from a project that matched his discipline to its premise. The 2022 film Eye for an Eye: The Blind Swordsman — original Chinese title 目中无人, meaning No One in My Eyes — cast him as Cheng Xiazi, a visually impaired bounty hunter who dispatches enemies with accuracy that confounds everyone who underestimates him. The film performed beyond expectations. A sequel arrived in 2024. Producer Bill Kong saw what the series had built and extended an offer for something at a different scale.

That offer became The Furious, directed by veteran action choreographer Kenji Tanigaki in his feature debut, with Joe Taslim and Yayan Ruhian as co-stars. Miao plays Wang Wei, a mute father pursuing a criminal network that has taken his daughter. The film debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival Midnight Madness program, was acquired by Lionsgate and XYZ Films for global distribution, and opened in June 2026 to a 100 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

The year 2025 had already been signaling a shift. He performed as a martial artist at the opening ceremony of China 15th National Games. Northeast Police Story 3 went to theaters in early 2026, his first theatrical release in China in nearly nine years. In June 2025, on Father Day, he and Jet Li shared a moment on social media, recreating a scene from their 1994 film.

He has been married since 2013 to actress He Yannie, and they have a daughter. He discusses his private life rarely in interviews, preferring to talk about training: six days a week, mornings and afternoons.

A sequel to The Furious is already in development. Whatever that becomes, the question his 2026 work now poses is more interesting than any sequel announcement: how does a man who spent twenty years making films the world largely did not watch learn, in his forties, to make silence the most expressive thing in the frame.
